Stay connected to your Jewish community and keep Jewish culture in your child’s life.
Grades K-1 and 2-4
Kids B’Kef. Students will learn and explore Judaism in a fun and creative environment. Each week will have its own theme from Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), Derech Aretz (behaving respectfully), and even exploring the Jewish calendar and the holidays. Classes will include stories, activities, fun art projects, cooking, and games, that all tie in to the week’s themes and lessons.
Kef = FUN!
Available on both JCC campuses one day a week after school, this K-4 program provides fun and creative hands-on exploration of Judaism from a more cultural perspective. After all, the Hebrew word “Kef” means fun! Designed for families unaffiliated with a synagogue, your youngsters will get the same knowledge they would at Sunday school, but with less intensity and more focus on the cultural aspects of Judaism. Our program coordinator, Katie London has found a way to bring Jewish values and culture to life through fun, hands-on activities!
Running the program on both campuses, Katie has been an active member of the JCC since 1995 and has over 6 years of experience teaching Sunday school and working with Jewish youth groups. From gluing future plans on a mirror, to making edible Sukkahs and to the absolution of sins (Tashlich) on Yom Kippur, Katie has used her experience to foster an environment that the kids really enjoy and don’t feel like they’re taking a class. Taking an active, physical roll in the learning process, the kids are not only having more fun, but their memory retention is significantly greater.
It’s not all about the Jewish holidays at Kids B’Kef. Katie also capitalizes on her time spent in Israel by teaching the kids the Hebrew language and cultural aspects of Israel through art projects and cooking lessons. Additionally, she brings in guest visitors from around the J, exposing the kids to other programs and staff members making them feel part of the community and further enriching their current experiences at the Center.
"Kids B'Kef has been just the right way for our 2nd grade daughter to bridge her connection back to the SJCC after attending pre-school. We were looking for programming that would offer her a connection to the caring community she had grown to know while expanding her understanding of jewish customs, culture and language. The once weekly format of this class was also a nice fit for our busy schedule and she looked forward to going each week versus having "another" thing to attend and packing more classroom time into an already full program of activities. I am excited to see how B'Kef grows the program as it expands and can recommend it to any family looking for a way to keep their kids connected to the jewish community and growing their understanding of having a jewish identity."
